Lens Advice for Our India Photography Journey
India is a dream destination for photographers - from vibrant street scenes and intimate portraits to vast landscapes and wildlife safaris. You don’t need every lens you own, but having the right combination will help you feel confident and creative in any situation we encounter.
Below is a simple guide to help you cover all bases while keeping your kit manageable and enjoyable to carry.
1. A Versatile Everyday Lens (Your Go-To)
Recommended range:
Full frame: 24–70mm
APS-C / crop sensor: 18–55mm or 16–80mm
This will likely be the lens you use most. It’s perfect for:
Street photography and daily life
Travel storytelling
Environmental portraits
Architecture and details
If you only bring one lens for the day to day activities, make it something like this one.
2. A Portrait Lens (For People & Emotion)
Recommended options:
35mm, 50mm, or 85mm prime
Or a zoom that reaches 70–100mm
India is full of powerful human stories. A portrait lens lets you:
Create beautiful subject separation
Capture candid moments discreetly
Work well in lower light
A 50mm is a fantastic all-rounder if you’re unsure.
3. A Telephoto Lens (Especially Important for Safari days)
Recommended range:
Full frame: 70–200mm or 100–400mm
Crop sensor: 55–200mm or 100–300mm
For our Ranthambore safaris, this is essential for wildlife. It’s also great for:
Layered street scenes
Distant details
Shooting without being intrusive
If wildlife excites you, this is where to prioritise! Getting ‘close’ to the tigers without getting too close!
4. A Wide-Angle Lens (Optional but Beautiful)
Recommended range:
Full frame: 16–35mm
Crop sensor: 10–20mm or 10–18mm
Great for:
Landscapes and big skies
Temples, palaces, and interiors
Creative perspectives in busy streets
Not essential, but wonderful if you love a sense of place and scale.
5. Practical Tips for the Trip
2–3 lenses is plenty - this is a creative journey, not a gear-heavy one
Bring a comfortable camera strap or harness
A small cleaning cloth is useful for dust
Don’t stress about having “the perfect kit” - storytelling matters more than gear
We’ll be focusing on seeing, feeling, and telling stories, not on technical perfection. I’ll help you make the most of whatever equipment you bring.
If you’d like personalised advice based on what you already own, I’m always happy to help.
