Wow - what a year its been! So many fantastic opportunities have come my way in 2017 and with this new blog I thought no better way to start than with a little reminiscing.
I became a member of the Guild of Photographers around a year and a half ago and at the start of 2017 I decided to really make the most of my membership. I began by entering the Image of the Month (IOM) competition. The IOM is judged by a panel of professional judges and I had seen the standards were very high, with regular posts being shared showcasing the silver and gold award winners. The images were way above anything I produce so for me, I didn't have high expectations and I simply wanted to give it a go! Well, throughout the year I came away with a whole bunch of bronzes and 2 silvers - more than I ever expected! To top this off I received an email early December time to let me know I had been selected as a finalist for the image of the year! The awards ceremony is on 3rd Feb 2018 so I will be sure to let you know how this goes. I also decided to apply for my qualified status a couple of months ago, which I am pleased to confirm I passed first time. I now even have letters after my name!
Early on in the year I applied through Bournemouth Council in an open call to be the photographer for an exhibition that would represent the LGBT Community in Bournemouth in 2017. This was to be part of a celebration of the 50 year anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality and would be held at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum along Bournemouth sea front. I put forward my ideas and much to my surprise, I was awarded the commission! Throughout this process I met up with many groups associated with the community and made some great new friends along the way. The final selection was centred around Bourne Free - Bournemouth's Pride Festival which is held annually in the town. We had an opening night which was incredible, then the following day it opened up to the general public.
Another personal highlight was the start of something new, something I never thought I could do, I embarked on a series of photography talks at local camera clubs. To share a passion for something is the most incredible feeling, especially when people want to hear what you have to say. I have more bookings in the pipeline for 2018 and would love to hear from anyone who may wish to invite me along as a speaker.
After working with an agency selling images to the press for a year or so, I decided to make a change this year and working under a new relationship there have been many images gone to print - including my first front cover of a newspaper!
I was lucky enough to be approached by Dorset Life magazine this year asking to print a feature on me. Of course I said yes and accepted their offer. 4 whole pages of my images in a magazine I have admired and only dreamed of having a feature in! Amazing!
Amongst all of this, my prints, canvases and calendars have been increasingly popular. I have every single person following me to thank for this. The support I receive truly is incredible!
In addition to my crazy early morning alarm calls for adventures along the Jurassic coast and beyond, I have shot some incredible weddings and family sessions. Thank you for every single booking - words cannot express how grateful I am.
I have some exciting new ventures in the pipeline for 2018 so please keep your eyes peeled on my social media outlets along with future blog posts here on my website.
Here's to a happy, healthy and positive 2018 everyone!
